I've always loved models. When I was a kid, I collected all kinds of them. I had model airplanes, motor vehicles, boats, trains - you think of it I had it. Of course, die-cast models were very cool, but my favorite ones were those that you could put together. I had a 1 48 scale model flying Fortress that was my pride-and-joy.

When I went to architecture school, I gave everything up. I figured that I couldn't make a career in models, and should do some-thing else that I liked. Little did I know what was waiting for me. I in point of fact got a job in architectural model making! If you enjoy working with models and have working knowledge architecture, this is an astounding field to get into. When I make architectural scale models, I get to create complete minute worlds. Most of my architecture scale-model clients do not want to just have a model of the building that they're proposing. They want a model that reveals the whole surrounding area along with the building. This gives framework to the vision, and makes it look as if it has already sprung to life. This is where architectural scale model builders coming in.

One of the great things about architecture scale-model making is how painstaking it is. Despite all the advances of contemporary tech, there's still only one way to make an architecture scale-model: by hand. Sure, there are some perks that we have that prior generations didn't. The individual pieces of architectural scale models can be stamped out. This saves thousands of hours of work, because you don't have to cut each piece by itself. However, adapting the architectural blue-print to an architecture scale-model, creating the parts, creating the molds, trimming the parts, and putting them all together, all still need to be done by peoples' hands. Nobody has puzzled out a way to automate the process.

I am appreciative that they haven't figured out a way to take the individual crafts-men away from the architectural scale-model. This job is a dream come true, and I'm glad it can not be done more effectively by machinery. I think it will be quite a long time before anybody puzzles out another way to do it. If it were simply a matter of mass manufacturing architecture scale miniatures, it would be a different story. You could make one design and have it created by a machine. But each architecture scale model is custom-ordered, and so each must be custom made.
